Noteworthy Student Outcomes

  • Freshman to Sophomore Retention Rate: 94%. When students stay in school, they stay on course for timely graduation and save money. This is also an indicator that the whole system at an institution is working properly, not just the recruitment component.
  • 73% of TCNJ students graduated within four years, compared to 41% at New Jersey private four-year colleges and 31% at four-year public colleges. There are only six public colleges and universities nationally that maintain 4-year graduation rates of 70% or greater. They are the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, the College of William and Mary, The College of New Jersey, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
  • 86% of TCNJ students graduated within six years (8th nationally among public institutions of higher education)
  • The graduate/professional schools most frequently attended by TCNJ graduates include the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University, NYU, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, UMDNJ, Thomas Jefferson, and Drexel.
  • 84% of TCNJ students who have applied to medical school have been accepted (national average approximately 44%)
  • TCNJ students have won Fulbright, Marshall, Gates Millennium, Goldwater, Phi Kappa Phi, Truman, and National Science Foundation awards, among other prestigious national fellowships and scholarships.
  • Praxis II (Education) pass rate for TCNJ students has consistently been 99%-100%
  • 95% average first time pass rate on the registered nurse licensing examination (NCLEX-RN) for the past 5 years.
  • 100% first time pass rate on the family nurse practitioner certification examination for the past 10 years.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering examination pass rate for TCNJ students was 88% (national average of about 70%, and TCNJ requires all of its graduating B.S. students to take the exam, while many institutions do not)
  • TCNJ engineers are known to achieve post-graduate placement at companies such as Lockheed Martin Corp., Johnson & Johnson, Stryker Corp., Navair, Merck, Microsoft, CMX, and Picatinny Arsenal, and at graduate schools such as Princeton, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, and Rutgers.
  • TCNJ is consistently ranked number 1 in New Jersey for overall pass rates on the CPA
  • School of Business seniors take ETS’ “major fields exam” and repeatedly rank in the 90th percentile or above in finance, accounting, marketing, management, quantitative analysis, and international, information systems. In economics and legal & social environment, our students consistently rank in the 85th percentile.
  • 84% of TCNJ students who have applied to medical school have been accepted (national average approximately 44%)
  • TCNJ is the top producer of American Chemical Society (ACS)-certified bachelor’s degree chemistry graduates in the State of New Jersey
  • 71 first– and second–place finishes is best among the nation’s 400-plus Division III colleges and universities during the past 30 years.

  • According to the most recent National Survey for Student Engagement, TCNJ bettered the average of its Carnegie Foundation peers in the level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment, as they apply to the experience of first-year students.
  • The College of New Jersey’s chapter of Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), the official honor society of the communication discipline, is the most highly represented and awarded chapter on the national level since NCA took over management of the honor society in 1995
